And what our research is highlighting probably isn't the only thing that's explaining all of this, but I think explaining a big chunk of it, which is that when we get the choice,

to engage with others or avoid them, often we're choosing unwisely.

We choose.

The problem with loneliness isn't that it is being foisted upon us.

It is that we are choosing it too often for ourselves, and we can choose differently.

So that's a sizable piece.

I think there are three pieces that at least we have identified.

Surely there are more pieces, but this is what we've documented in our research.

The first one relates to the piece you just described about judgment.

And it turns out that we judge each other on multiple kinds of dimensions.

Psychologists have identified at least two kind of fundamental ones.

One is we evaluate each other in terms of our warmth, right?

How kind, friendly, nice, trustworthy, honest are we?

Are you somebody I want to approach?

Are you somebody I'm a little scared of and want to avoid?

So warmth is one.

The other one is competency.

How capable are we?

How capable, effective, intelligent, smart, witty are you, right?

That's competency.
