The husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's and he looked at me, Mel, and he said, how do I not lose hope?
He said to me, how do I not lose hope?
And you can imagine as a doctor, that's a very, very hard question to answer.
And I'm a cardiologist and this was about a neurologic degenerative condition.
It's not my field.
But I could see that he was struggling and his wife was in the room with him.
And he said, I still have so much I want to write.
I love my wife so much.
I have so much I want to do with her.
I'm getting like emotional thinking about it.
And...
And I'm falling apart from my disease.
And so I just sat there with him and I said, you have to find hope in the small moments of every single day.
So every day that you wake up and you see your wife and you can say, I love you and hear her say, I love you, that's hope, right?
Every day that you can sit at your computer and still write your book that you're writing, that's hope.
It is...
The fact that there could be a treatment tomorrow that you don't know about that comes down the pipeline for your condition.
It is literally finding those small moments of joy and looking for something that you may not know that exists and believing in that, something that is further down the future.
That's hope.
And I want you to lean into that.
