As a person who's talking to folks on the ground, talking to voting rights experts and voting rights advocates, you've got to be able to articulate in no uncertain terms exactly how you plan to protect the vote of black and minority people in this country, because we will lose everything, everything if we don't make serious steps here and now.

They are two of only five black individuals in the U.S.
Senate.
And I think it's important to point out that we are actually on the kind of cusp of adding another black senator.
There have only been 14 total in the entire history of this country.
And I think this is important because what it tells me is that statewide, where when black people are able to run statewide, when people of color are running statewide, there are enough votes in order to get them elected.
But when we look at the congressional level, Republicans across the South, where most black people live, have worked tirelessly.
to diminish and to undercut black political power in a way where we are going to see fewer and fewer and fewer if this continues.
I am heartbroken listening to the senator talk about exactly what black people had to go through to get here.
And I'll be honest with you, Don.
It feels to me that we have lost sight of history.
I mean, we got so high and mighty on our Barack Obama victory that we've lost sight that this is a continual fight.
In every generation, we've had to fight this fight.
And I think it felt like we'd actually overcome with the election of President Barack Obama.
But that was just a mirage.
It is not that he wasn't great.
It's not that that wasn't a great moment.
But it is not the end of the fight.
