the big dislocation or disruption was exports were interrupted out of the Persian Gulf and production had to be shut in.
And so you lost this unprecedented volume of supply.
So when you start thinking about equities selling off,
because of some reason, that reason might spill over to the oil pit.
In other words, interest rates are going to double or triple.
I'm not saying that's going to happen.
That's not what we do.
But someone says interest rates are going to double or triple.
We're going to get a global recession.
Oil's now selling off in reaction to a concern about a global recession.
Supply-demand may be totally fine, but oil's selling off because of concerns about broad economic activity grinding to a halt or slowing dramatically.
So my job, if you're a money manager, your job is tough because you have to actually deal with both sides of the equation, what's real and what people perceive to be real.
And it's not that perceptions are always wrong, but when they do get out of line, like we have right now, and there's been a lot of cases where that's happened before, it's
then the real commodity of value is patience, because you kind of want to pick and choose when you're going to take action.
Because you could love Microsoft, but if you're going to make money in Microsoft stock, enough other people also have to like Microsoft or love Microsoft for the trade to work.
And that's why momentum is probably still the single biggest factor that's accounted for when people are making buying or selling decisions in the financial markets.
It's sometimes more critical than what may fundamentally be going on.
And you can see it in reverse, too.
Like in 2022, when Russia went into Ukraine, there was a false narrative put out actually by the IEA that the world was going to shun 3 million barrels of Russian oil supply.
And oil prices went from 70-something a barrel to 140 with no impacts on actual physical oil availability.
