Yes, I mean, there was a very basic intuition and a sense of shame after World War II, that democracies had denied access to people that after World War II, everybody, of course, knew what many should have known before and did, that were facing, you know, a threat to their life, to be killed, to be taken to a camp.
Now, the reality, however, is we've given ourselves these conventions.
Now the question is how do we sustain public support?
Democracies need public support, majorities, to live up to them.
And I go to the channel.
I mean, this is a world away from Jews fleeing Nazi Germany.
You know, these are people coming from France.
This is a management problem.
It's not about human rights.
You have no human right to come to Britain.
How do we create, and we've talked, I've said images beat statistics.
In this case, the image the center needs in the Mediterranean and in the channel, it's the same challenge, is the image that we have a policy, we announce it, and from day X, people stop getting into boats.
And in the case of the channel, it's between democracies.
They are leaving a safe country, France, to come to another safe country, the UK.
This would be easy to solve if we would just have the political focus.
And the political focus in this case would be to say, everybody arrives from the 1st of September in the UK.
It doesn't leave the European Convention of Human Rights.
It doesn't need to.
It doesn't need any troops.
Anybody arrives, will be detained and sent back to a European Union country.
