The pictures, of course, need the story in the background that people already are willing to accept.

Remember when we saw the picture of the little boy, Alan Kurdi, who died in Bodrum?

The story when people saw that picture, yes, they saw a little boy, but many, many, many, many refugees died in the 10 years later.

This had an enormous impact because at that time people had some information about the war in Syria, the brutality.

They saw him as a victim, somebody who had to flee his family.

They had compassion, empathy.

Now, the point about stories is that the biggest story in which something like theater is plugged in, that it confirms now, is the story of the invasion from the third world, as Trump calls it, or from Africa, or from the non-white world, as Elon Musk constantly keeps tweeting.

So the far right in Europe and the far right in America and powerful voices in the world of social media are constantly reinforcing this story, which is the story of this identitarian movement, that we are under attack, that this is bound to get worse.

Now, that's why you can't ever accept that numbers actually go down because then the story falls apart.

That Europe is facing an existential threat.

And faced with this story, all these losses of dramatic control, which this was for 24 hours, look like confirmation.

So the question is, how do you respond?

And you can't respond like governments in Germany and Britain and Austria and elsewhere have done.

And I've seen it in the last few days in the UK.

The numbers of crossings in the channel have gone down by 40%.

But you still see the boats last week.

One day, 800 people come.
