I'm so grateful that I was in my 20s in the 90s in Sydney because I found Oxford Street.

And it was just a love fest, you know.

largely due to the kind of chemicals that everybody was imbibing at the time.

But also there was this whole culture.

There was this whole culture of freedom and expression and creativity.

And I was spending my nights wearing basically three bits of gaff tape

And some platform boots on a podium in DCM, on the podium that I always danced on.

And embarrassingly, sometimes when I would get on it, people would get off it because I would dance, like, with my whole body so much that, you know, I was actually a danger.

I'm so sorry.

And I would dance for eight hours a night, three nights a week at various spots on Oxford Street and parties.

There was this real tribalism, but it was very, very, my experience was it was incredibly inclusive.

And I found my people because the gay scene didn't tell me I was too big.

In fact, I wasn't even that big.

I was just one sort of shiny thing in an ocean of sequins.

And I could be flamboyant and I could be strange and I could be too much and I could be loud and I could be all the things that I got reviled for.

And I was loved for those things and I found acceptance and I found communion and I found solidarity.

And also to be in a community where everything is allowed and to be able to look under every single rock in my own psyche and have none of it be bad or wrong or judged, that was just like a balm to a quite raw and tender soul.

I've spent a lot of time studying fairy stories.

And fairy stories, once you get underneath the Disney version of fairy stories, they're teaching stories.
