I think also probably, you know, geography plays a part in national mentalities as well, doesn't it?

this kind of concept of borders as being incredibly stable and geographically defined, which you don't have in places on the continent where borders are shifting a lot, particularly, you know, I mean, Turkey, Turkey only became a nation state in its current form in 1923.
And there's still this sort of real and palpable fear amongst Turkish people that outside powers still want to rearrange their borders.
It sounds kind of conspiratorial to British ears, but once you've lived there a bit, you sort of understand it.
But also I think it's probably fairly hard for governments in places like Britain and elsewhere in Western Europe to find the balance between accurately conveying what the risks are and not panicking people.
One of the points that I make in Hinterlands is that
I think people will think, okay, a world war might be on the brink of breaking out.
And they're thinking very much in terms of, you know, traditional hot wars, the kind of thing that you see in Ukraine, trenches, right?
Actually, the argument that I make is that this war has been underway for decades.
a decade or more already, actually, because it's a war that's being fought through other means, through hybrid means.
So, you know, in Britain, we can see things like, you know, the, I think it was 2018, wasn't it?
The attack on the former Russian spies in Salisbury with Novichok, right?
That's an act of war.
That's an act of aggression on British soil.
Probably just didn't really see it as such.
Yeah.
Right.
