Well, I think when I was in hospital, the mental health facility, I came out and that sort of start of the next year after that is when Grace Tame won the Australian of the Year.
And I remember seeing her on stage, arguably the nation's biggest stage, saying child sexual abuse.
Oh, my God, that's like really took me back.
And I think I've always had this notion instilled within me that from the hospital that it's not my fault what happened to me, but it is my responsibility to do something great with it.
And I think I've always had this drive to want to help other people.
I think what I've experienced has instilled a real sense of empathy within me to want to understand that, you know, this really is an injustice and it's a systemic thing as well that we need to fix.
Because, you know, in Australia, child sexual abuse is rife.
28.5% of the population has experienced it.
It's one in three girls, one in five boys will experience child sexual abuse before their 18th birthday.
I think there's a myriad of things.
I think it's, you know, there's hardly any consequences for it.
You know, I'd argue that a lot of survivors, you know, can't comprehend that what they've experienced is abuse and I know that firsthand.
You know, I was like that for many years.
Internalised guilt, yeah, all of that.
But the fact of the matter is, there's just, it is rife and we do need to take it seriously and start having really genuine conversations about why we're doing, why.
And I think also Kate, sorry, I'm rambling on a bit, but I think it's so difficult when people are faced with that, with that, those statistics, because it's so awful to actually think about and fathom.
people's sort of knee-jerk response is to turn away from it and ignore it.
And go, oh, no, that doesn't happen.
