And sure, the statistics show that abuse disproportionately occurs to women and girls.
So we can acknowledge the exceptions without discounting the problem that is presented in front of us, without discounting the truth.
And I just want to tell you a story that picks up on that, because I remember I spoke at a New South Wales police conference and I was in a room full of head constables from every police station in the state.
And I was on a panel with two other women and I spoke about my experience of going to the police station and how I was instantly believed because I was this, you know, I was 20 at the time, pardon me, I was over six foot, walked in and told what happened to me and I was believed straight away.
The two women who spoke on the panel with me talked about the disbelief that they experienced and that they faced.
From police.
And when we got off the stage, obviously, you know, the police come up and say, oh, thanks for speaking.
Really appreciate it and stuff.
There was this head constable who came up to me.
He was a man.
And he said, it's just so difficult because you're a bloke.
So when you walk into a police station, it's just so much more believable.
And my stomach dropped.
And I thought, is that the culture that women and girls are up against?
Is that the systemic sort of dismissal of the violence that women and girls experience?
No, he didn't.
He just said it.
And he was so firm in that.
Yeah.
But it's just, it was so baffling for me to have to hear that.
