Unfortunately, pain is such a universal experience.

It's something we all go through.

And purpose is something we also all try to do.

We try to make meaning out of what we've been through.

And that's part of the human condition, to want to find meaning for what we've been through and that what we've experienced is not something that's happened in vain.

And this book is for people who are sitting there and thinking they've got all this energy within them to want to do something.

They just don't know where to start and this book is the answer to that.

I started from a place of healing, I think.

You know, I went to the mental health rehab and –

was going on that journey of wanting to become a different version of myself you know i was never going to go to who i was before the abuse occurred i think that's unrealistic to think i'll regain who i was but i wanted to become a version of myself that didn't pass on trauma and actually did something with it and i remember in the news at the time i would see like male survivors specifically

who were like victims of abuse through the Catholic Church or something like that, they weren't speaking out until their 50s and 60s to the media.

Yes, so true.

And whilst, you know, I have great respect for everyone, that everyone has their own timeline and that healing isn't linear, you know, it's not a structured thing, I think I saw that.

And I saw how they were still dealing with it quite late in their lives.

And I just had this sense of urgency to want to get on the front foot of it and do something with it.

And I think that's how that started.

And also specific to the campaign of the Your Reference Ain't Relevant campaign, which aimed to abolish the provision of good character references, that was –

That came from my lived experience as well, not directly because my case never went to court, but my mother was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of my father.

And when she went to court, she was subjected to having to hear her abuser's good character references lauded and I could just see the hope drain from her face reference by reference as they were read aloud.
