I couldn't ask her about raising children beyond a certain age.

I couldn't ask her about menopause, about relationships later in life, female friendships and how they change, because she didn't have those experiences beyond a certain point.

And so turning 50 for me was a celebration.

15 of my female friends and their daughters, the ones who had daughters, on a big hike to Eagle Rock in Topanga Canyon.

And we climbed to the very top of it and looked around, 360 degree view of the Santa Monica Mountains.

And it was beautiful.

My sister was there, my sister-in-law.

It was a wonderful celebratory event.

I will say 60 was a little weirder, but still a celebration, still an acknowledgement that I'm so glad to be here.

Yes, it's a grief surge moment, and women don't know to expect that.

But they will often, in the medical community, be asked questions about when your mom went through menopause, the same way that they might have been asked, what was your mom's pregnancy like or her labor?

They're often asked, what was your mom's menopause like?

At what age did your mother go through menopause?

That was it.

That was the question I got in.

I didn't know.

So I asked my mom's sister, which was the closest that I could get.

And then of course my sister could ask me, but I didn't have access to that information.

And it just brought up another like surge of sadness.

Oh, because it was a reminder, not just that my mom's not here, but that she didn't get to live long enough to have that experience.
