New Mexico's attorney general sued Meta, claiming they failed to adequately protect minors from being exploited on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The state argues Meta's own internal documents reveal company officials have known about the grooming, solicitation, and efforts to traffic children through their platforms.
Meta attorneys have pointed to First Amendment but also liability protections they have, arguing they can't be held responsible for third-party content, though they also argue they've implemented a number of child safety protocols, including restrictions on direct messages to users under 16.
Ahead of jury selection, the judge in the case denied Meta's request to restrict recordings and streamings of the trial.

The attorneys for Jose Ibarra say his trial attorney did not ask for a competency evaluation ahead of proceedings and that they believe he has a congenital deficiency that makes him incapable of preparing for and participating in his own defense.
After Ibarra was convicted and in response to this motion from his new attorneys, the judge ordered a mental evaluation last summer.
And said Friday, that assessment found Ibarra was competent and had been at the time of trial a year prior.
Ibarra was convicted of murdering 22-year-old Laken Riley while she was jogging on the University of Georgia campus in Athens.
Prosecutors say Ibarra tried to sexually assault Riley before killing her.
His DNA was found under her fingernails.
