And there were people who thought, wow, because of the network effects, everybody's on AOL and everybody needs to be on AOL because everybody else is there.
And so if you started a competitor to AOL and nobody was on it, who would go there, you know?
Just in the nick of time, the Internet started to get popular and it was outside of AOL and AOL couldn't out-compete the whole of the Internet, which meant we did have this open place with people running servers in every country of the world and lots of different hard questions come up because of that.
But certainly, that diversity of an open Internet is actually very, very important.
I remember when Yahoo was just this page of links, basically.
It wasn't much.
It was just a page of links.
And then it was getting popular because people were like, oh, there's this new thing.
And, you know, there wasn't that much on the Internet back then.
But you did want to be able to click around and find things.
And that was it.

Yeah, and now we get irritated if, you know...
The kids are each on their iPad watching a movie and we're watching a movie and suddenly it slows down and we're like, what is this?
We can only have three movies in the house at once?
It's terrible.
And we're on our phones.
Yep.
So I think we are, in our day-to-day lives, the best way to remember and to experience this is, you know, if you get into a lift, an elevator, and you're in with five complete strangers, you're not immediately typically thinking, which one of them is going to stab me?
Or, you know, am I going to get out of here alive?
