So that was one of the, and out of that trip, I can tell you came some things that were,
were game changing for our tour.
We took our own scrum and ruck machines.
We took them to South Africa and put them together over in South Africa and transported them with us because we didn't, the South Africans are not gonna help you win.
And this is something that this team will understand going to South Africa now.
They won't help you at all.
And it's a tough place to tour, great place to tour, but it needs, you need to be well organized.
And the other,
Probably the other vital thing was that I worked out if we were going to win a series in South Africa, which was three consecutive tests after the TriNations game in Cape Town, there's no way that team could play midweek.
You couldn't play midweek and then testing.
So for that reason, I came up with the answer of 36 players.
I think 28 or 30 would have been, 28 probably would have been the maximum that had ever gone away.
and I explained to the board that the 36 was required so I could play a midweek team and a test team, and that no test player had to strip and play in the midweek games.
A few of them might have to stand on the bench, but that was okay in those days, because there was no substitutions other than injury.
I put this to them and I still remember the chairman at the end of a table saying, well, 36 players won't work.
And I thought, oh no, money, here we go.
I'm going to be told we can't afford it, which was part of it.
But I said, why is that?
And he said, there wouldn't be a bus big enough to take all those people.
I said, well, maybe we can get a van to go with the bus if we need to.
