I can't tell you how many hours I have spent, otherwise known as wasted, listening over and over and over again to commission meetings trying to figure out what the direction actually is to you.

So I think that's going to be a real problem, a real challenge, because this is where we talk amongst ourselves and try and provide you with some policy direction.

And candidly, we talk in circles.

So that's going to be problematic.

But I think the most important thing you can do, and the thing I can't stress enough,

is over-communicate.

Where I have seen city managers throughout my long career in government not be successful is not meeting regularly with their various elected officials and keeping them up to date.

I've always said, as a city manager, you own one job.

That job is communication.

And that's communication up to the elected officials, it's down to your staff, and it's sideways out to the community.

And every city manager that I've ever seen get invited to seek opportunities elsewhere has always been failure to communicate in those three directions.

So I would encourage you to be successful as a city manager, communicate, communicate, and then over-communicate some more.
