She played field hockey.

She got really good grades.

She spent a semester studying abroad in Spain.

I did, too.

I love that about her.

And that time overseas really helped her decide that she wanted to work in international affairs.

But as her ambitions grew, Anne-Marie began to struggle personally.

And it was during college that she started restricting her eating.

And then life had another horrible surprise for her.

And that's in March of 1986, when she was 20 years old and halfway through college, her father died from leukemia.

She was devastated.

Now she's lost both of her parents.

but she couldn't really share her grief with her siblings.

Many of them said that he was actually dead to them years earlier when he abandoned the family.

You know, he had struggled with drinking for a long time and a lot of her siblings just wanted nothing to do with him.

Anne-Marie, it seemed, was the only one that still talked to her father.

And after he passed away, her eating disorder got a lot worse.

It seemed like it gave her the sense of control that she desperately needed after losing both parents so young.

But, you know, she was still this really ambitious, really smart girl, and she kept moving forward in her life.

So after she graduated from Wesley in 1991, she landed an internship in Washington, D.C.
