It's just really messed up.
So it just removed teachers and school nurses and classmates and classmates' parents.
just an entire layer of people who see a child every single day, gone.
But from the outside, none of this looked like control.
It just looked like devotion, like a mother that really cared about her small sick daughter, sick, quotation marks.
So in 2003, a small Louisiana newspaper, the Slidell Century News, ran a feature on the pair.
And the headline was, Life Takes Many Turns for Good for Little Girl in Slidell.
And the article told a very heartbreaking story.
A mother and her sick daughter abandoned by their family after the death of Dee Dee's mother.
Bouncing between homes, twice living out of their car, finally finding stability in public housing, embraced by a local church.
Not to mention a struggling single mom and her dying little girl.
This story was just, you know, quote unquote, irresistible.
And almost none of it was true.
At least not the way Dee Dee told it.
But it worked.
It always worked for Dee Dee.
And a former neighbor later described never once questioning Gypsy's conditions.
Because why would they?
Dee Dee was always there at the hospital bedside, explaining her daughter's complicated history to every new doctor.
And as for the doctors, some of them did notice inconsistencies because there were tests that did come back clean and symptoms that never appeared outside of Dee Dee's descriptions.
