It's completely messed up.

So the harm done to Gypsy Rose Blanchard was by no means metaphorical.

It wasn't just stolen time because it was years and years of her life or a stolen childhood.

It was surgical and physical and it was permanent.

Operations were performed on her body as a child when she didn't need them because her mother said she did.

And it would start with Gypsy's mouth.

Now, Dee Dee had two of Gypsy's salivary glands surgically removed.

Now, these are the glands that produce saliva and that help protect your teeth and help you chew and help you swallow and guard your mouth against infection.

And Dee Dee told doctors Gypsy drooled excessively.

So the glands came out and then came the teeth.

And as Gypsy grew older, her teeth began to rot and decay.

a predictable consequence of the surgeries and the medication and the neglect of a mouth that could no longer protect itself.

And Dee Dee's explanation to the world was that it's the medication and it's her condition.

And so her teeth were extracted.

So she was a teenager.

losing damn near all her teeth.

And then for Dee Dee, you know, every tooth that was pulled, it just made her look even more sick.

So it was just better for Dee Dee.
