So I know everyone's like, we want a high draft pick.
We can't have good goaltending.
But you're also trying to build the confidence of young athletes in front of it.
And having a good goaltender can make a massive difference in that.
So I see both sides of this.
Well, it's environment, right?
Like, it's environment.
And this isn't meant to be a criticism of Adam Foote, obviously, because he was a part of the defensive environment that they all excelled under when Rick Tockey was the head coach.
But I think a lot of us in the media have been around long enough and knew this group well enough that as soon as we, like, pre-season interview when Adam Foote started talking about some of the changes in the defensive zone and more emphasis on a read-based system, a little less simplistic system and more...
if this happens we do this like to a certain degree every system has it but leaning more towards the reads knowing that tyler myers had struggled in a system where he's asked to do more sort of thinking knowing that marcus patterson hadn't been as effective i think a lot of us looked at each other like okay like he knows this group so obviously this is a change he thinks can work but we kind of like we scratched our heads i think we said publicly like
Some of these defenders have not had their best defending in systems that ask them to do this.
Why are they switching to this?
And it ended up being somewhat of an abject disaster.
And the goalies bear the brunt, right?
Like Rick Tockett...
Let's take a look at what happened in Philadelphia.
Dan Bladar looked pretty darn good because Rick Cockett had them, so his goalies only had to worry about playing one half of the net.
The game's never been more unpredictable.
The 886 expected save percentage tells you that, but adding degrees of predictability for your goaltenders as a defensive coaching system is so important.
Chances of clearing waivers probably went up as the end of the season unraveled.
