What are the chances that one of them is never going to have a bad day, never going to have a difference in opinion, never going to just have a fight with their parent and not have it come out within the relationship?
Just statistically speaking, if people are honest,
there's going to be a little bit of friction at least.
And so it's healthy, really healthy if people can communicate that friction and hurt feelings and unmet needs in some way, shape or form.
Now, the question of are we fighting in a healthy way comes down to resentment.
How do you know if resentment is starting to take down your relationship?
You can ask yourself,
What is unfair or imbalanced in this relationship?
What do I feel is unfair?
Because that's the very definition of resentment, the perception that you're being treated unfairly.
Now you can ask yourself, okay, I feel this X, Y, Z, me taking care of the kids every night, doing the bedtime routine without their help is unfair.
Okay.
Now, we communicate with the partner, hey, you know, this is unfair, expressing your needs, all of that, and their response to it is going to be critical as to whether that resentment gets resolved.
And this is where people run into trouble is that, A, getting back to empathy first, they don't know how to express understanding properly.
in a way that the person feels less lonely.
What usually happens is defensiveness.
I do so much, you know, you know I'm working 12 hours a day.
I helped out with the kids, you know, two weeks ago when you were off visiting your mother.
And now we start getting into, you know, scorekeeping and this and that.
