So, yeah, that's something to bear in mind.
podcast-host
So, what can cause low ferritin?
podcast-host
Um, well, you've got longer perimenopausal periods, so that's an obvious cause.
podcast-host
You're losing more blood.
podcast-host
You've had several pregnancies, you might have insufficient dietary iron depending on what you're eating.
podcast-host
You know, the most available form of iron is red meat.
podcast-host
It produces heme iron.
podcast-host
Um plant-based eaters obviously have issues sometimes absorbing iron because although you can find iron in plant foods, it's not the heme absorbable form, so you're getting less of it.
podcast-host
So I think your GP uh needs to look at your changing periods and review a full blood count here.
podcast-host
So looking at things like hemoglobin and other iron markers, not simply treating the

Ferritin number.
podcast-host
mm, some of your symptoms may come from iron deficiency, but you know, itchy ears and achy joints are not particularly specific to that.
podcast-host
Far more likely to be the estrogen issue.
podcast-host
So how can you raise your ferritin naturally?
podcast-host
Well I've talked about red meat.
podcast-host
You can have the dark poultry meat, so for example the leg meat in chicken.
podcast-host
Um there is a little bit in lentils and beans and tofu and pumpkin seeds, but obviously you'd need to eat quite a lot of that, um and leafy greens if you pair plant based sources with vitamin C.
podcast-host
Or vitamin C rich foods like an orange chopped into a salad, or you know, red peppers, things like that, that's going to help improve absorption.
podcast-host
Be aware of the things that lower absorption of iron, so things like tea, coffee, calcium supplements actually will interfere with iron absorption, and even large amounts of dairy can reduce iron absorption.
podcast-host
So just be careful when you're timing your foods.
