Last year it was $1,300 was the first, and then the next $1,300 is in the child's tax bracket.

So that strategy is not going to work for a 529.

Because if you're utilizing a 529 right now,

For all of your savings for education for children, we like to diversify that and either utilize a custodial account where you can use this strategy and have the tax savings or put it into a joint account in you and your spouse's name or an individual account that's under your name.

But to get the tax advantage, we're really talking about a custodial account that's in the names of the children and you're doing this strategy on a year-to-year basis to make sure you're taking as much advantage of that kiddie tax rule as you possibly can.
