You have to watch it because if you do have massive gains and then you sell and have a $5,000 gain, including interest and dividends, well, you're going to be paying taxes on those additional dollars that are coming out of the account.
You asked about rebalancing, though, and this is really important to think about in a broad context of any of your investment allocations.
You should always be looking at it, I would say, at least yearly to be doing a rebalance.
There's the intricacy of a broad rebalance for stocks versus bond mix, and there's the rebalance of, okay, I have S&P 500 is 50%, and I have international is 10%, and emerging markets is 10%, and getting those percentages right as well.
I would say at least yearly you want to be doing this and evaluating this.
We do this for our clients more than yearly, but at least once a year we're doing a rebalance kind of across the board to make sure people are in line with what their expected allocation is.
I'm going to talk now about allocation because this is super important.
As we enter this phase that we've had in the markets recently, and we might talk about this on other episodes, where it's a lot of volatility, you do not know what your appropriate allocation is until your account goes down.
I mean, you really don't because if the market just goes up every day or you've had two really strong years where the market's been continuing to go higher, you're very comfortable with an aggressive allocation.
But then the market goes down, you might realize, wow, I'm not sleeping well at night.
This is bad.
And my allocation is probably not appropriate for what my risk tolerance is because I'm starting to have these thoughts in my mind of, oh, I should be selling here.
This is scary.
Market's down.
I can just pull out and get back in at some time.
And we've seen countless times that does not work.
So really understanding what your allocation is, setting that plan, and then sticking to that plan and rebalancing over time is huge.
And I would say at least yearly you want to do that.
Even if you have two years where the market's been fantastic and you're like, oh, I'll just ride this.
Just let the S&P 500 keep going or let my stock side of my balance keep going.
