James's sister was away in France at the time.

I got her to come home.

It was really action stations and really frightening.

So we had a kind of an emotional visit with the kids where they didn't really know what was going on, but they could see that he looked dreadful.

He was so yellow.

He was hardly conscious some of the time.

You know, he'd wake up and give them a hug and ask them a couple of questions and then he'd be asleep again.

He just couldn't stay awake for much time at all.

And the kids went home again the next day and James was encouraged very much that this was maybe the end of the road for treatment and it was probably time to go to the hospice.

And that was something that he had been sort of against but we had a lot of dealings by now with the hospice nurses and social care team and they're just so lovely and welcoming.

So he reluctantly agreed that we would accept this bed that had come up in the hospice and we knew that we'd be closer to the kids then.

I said to him, do you want me to stay with you?

And he said, yeah.

So he was taken by ambulance.

We got to the hospice on the 14th of August last year.

And I had to drive separately to him because I had to charge the car on the way home.

So my mum was with me and I got to the hospice and he was in bed.

He had had every type of drug going for that journey because it was a very risky journey and he was in a lot of pain.

So he just wanted to be absolutely drugged out of it.

So James was in bed.
