I think about other friends of mine, and it's always the child loss.

There's this amazing woman, Nelba Marquez Green.

I don't know if you happen to follow her on social media, but she lost a child in the Sandy Hook massacre.

And I hear her speak about her grief, and we've had a chance to connect personally a bit.

And

I don't think I have the right to do that.

I don't think it's fair.

I think it creates undue pressure.

And I think some of it ties back to the fact that when we encounter, particularly in our culture, in our Western American society, when we encounter people who are dealing with something that seems unimaginable,

We almost want it to have meaning so that, you know, if someday that thing that we don't even want to think can happen to us does happen to us, you can put a little bit of a positive spin on it.

And I just don't think that's fair.

I don't think it's appropriate.

Yeah, yeah.

That's like, you know, the people who said that to me when my mom died, I was like, you could be in a better place.

Like, I was big mad.

Exactly.

That shame piece is a big part of it for me because when I was at my sickest, some days I was too weak to take a shower.

Or if I was able to take a shower, I might have to rest for months.

Yeah.

You know, I was just trying to survive.
