My best friend is a doctor.
Like, you know, I have all sorts of relationships and connections that I could leverage.
I can afford to do things out of pocket if they're going to help me feel better.
Like, I understand medical research studies.
And then I just I know all of these systemic inequities that exist in the world.
And so when I put those two things together, like I just I get angry and then I feel a need to do something.
So that's like Marissa's sort of personal story.
And the reason why I don't want to push people to make meaning out of their pain is because I.
I don't think that you can get meaning out of every single painful experience.
And when I wrote that, I wasn't thinking as much about myself as I was about people like my aunt, who's in the book.
My aunt, she's my mom's baby sister.
She had six kids.
She has two left.
And of the two that she has left, one is incarcerated and one is living with ALS.
And when I think about her and everything that she's been through in the last 20 to 25 years, I'm like, you can't make that make sense for me.
And I would say, actually, especially for me, as someone who identifies as deeply religious...
I don't think it is reasonable to push her to make meaning from like one horrible tragedy after another.
I mean, this woman has lost three of her children just in the last decade.
And that's just horrifying.
There's nothing okay about that.
