Absolutely.
Yeah, I mean, think about what our lives would be like if we didn't fall prey to what psychologists call the illusion of control.
So the illusion of control is basically saying that we grossly overestimate how much we dictate what happens in our life.
And if we didn't feel that way, if we didn't feel that we were the ones driving things, we would probably descend into nihilism.
We would wonder why we work so hard for anything.
We wouldn't feel as motivated in day-to-day life.
And in my case, I would feel a lot of despair, like, what's the point of any of this?
And so it makes so much sense why our brains evolved to have the illusion of control.
The challenge is that when
life makes other plans for us, right?
When that proverbial anvil drops from the sky on a sunny blue sky day, and it shatters that illusion.
And we are forced to reckon with the aftermath of what's happened to us and also reckon with the true limits of our control, right?
It often brings into the light that there is so much that we can't do.
But as someone who
does like having control and obviously hasn't been able to rid herself of that entirely.
One of my goals with this book was to give people concrete strategies they can use in their own life when they are in the throes of change or they're trying to process a past change or get ahead of a future one.
Strategies they can use to change their relationship with change so that they navigate it with more peace and more possibility.
well, there's so many different, I have a changed survival kit actually at the end of the book, but we can obviously walk through different, some of these different techniques in the course of the conversation because, you know, it's so funny, I remember,
And when I was dealing with a change a couple of years ago, this was 2020, my husband and I had been on this very long journey to try to start a family.
We had faced so many barriers and obstacles and disappointments at this point.
