We thought this would be illegal, irresponsible, and could lead to the closest thing that we have to martial law in this country.
We had to rush to the White House, meet the president in the map room as he was practicing the State of the Union, and persuade him not to include those lines in the speech as the stenographer sat there with his eyes wide open, wondering why this is how policy was made
in the United States of America.
That's who this man is.
It's one of the reasons, Don, next week we're going to be doing a rebuttal to the State of the Union is to say that this guy is a madman, to talk about how crazy this has become in a second term and the danger he poses to the fabric of our republic.
