And then, yeah, like from there, again, like the ego was just running rampant.

And just part of me, like as this cocky young builder, was just like looking at him and being like, man, if this guy can run his own business, I can 100% run my own business.
Knew nothing about running a business.
Yeah.
How did that double tax go in that first year?

And this is something that happens in building, like I see it now as being in the game 20-odd years.
And to start a business in New Zealand is one of the easiest things you could do.
Like, you go online, register a company, you're a business owner.
We had some false starts.

ego is just in the driver's seat hard like yeah I run my own business had all my own tools bought a van you know because I was 18 then so I could tick up a van I didn't even know what GST was like I didn't know what a tax return was like I hired an accountant because I thought that's what you had to do but I didn't know what questions to ask him I took him on as like a bookkeeper didn't know that I probably needed a lot more advice than that and just
started doing work i was like um typing up invoices and then like googling how to do we've all done that bro it was just like i had no idea what i was up to how'd you go with contracting no contracts whatsoever everything was a handshake and so like through that period right like i i took on staff and i had apprentices and um
know leadership back then too was just like you think i you're you're the best builder on site so you're the leader or um that probably turned into me for like oh you know my leadership's really developing if i buy a pioneer v for the boys then that then i'll be the leader like hard out you know and um then it was pack of ciggies you know pixies father boys will be so stoked on a friday all of that stuff you know i'll get them some new hivers or whatever yeah they'll think i'm the man and so i got like you know
19 through to 21-ish, 22, had six staff, was taking on full contract bills, no idea what I was up to, didn't know how to price work, no contracts, like I was more or less going to people and saying, I'll be like this, like, you know, $80,000, $100,000 renovations, you know, and just at the time, just like, you know, because I've come from
Absolutely nothing.
Mum's broke my whole life.
And, you know, for me, the thought of making more than 30 bucks an hour was just like, oh, like, wow.
