Now, this kind of links in with the capital gains tax side of things because

The flexibility the ATO gives you in choosing whether you use FIFO or minimize gain or whatever means the ATO aren't keeping track of your shares, your cost base and what you've sold.

And so the cost base adjustments come in

September you get your statement, it might say your cost base has been adjusted upwards.

So what you are supposed to do is then go through every parcel that you own and adjust it upwards by the proportion that it tells you to do it.

And the opposite can happen as well.

A cost-based decrease can happen and you're supposed to go through every single parcel and drop it down.

I'd say 5% of people.

I think that would be generous.

Yeah, what it means is the other 95 are filing their tax wrong or they're paying too much tax or they're underpaying tax.

And it compounds every year.

So the first year you have 12 parcels, you get your statement, you adjust those 12.

The second year, you have 24 parcels.

You get your statement.

You have to update all 24 parcels.

So this guy I'd met, he'd been investing for 10 years.

He said he had over 100 and something parcels and has never adjusted any of them.

So his job now is to go find his member statement from 10 years ago and adjust those 12.

And then nine years ago and adjust those 24.

And then eight years ago and adjust those 36 and work all the way forward through to today.
