Stop that.
Do this.
Why are you doing that?
And so once they get into that pattern of being reactive, then they're not in charge anymore.
Then the kid's negative behavior is what's driving the parent response.
And so reactivity takes parents out of the driver's seat.
Of being in charge and being and doing what someone might call today mindful parenting or intentional parenting.
They're just in react mode, and now the kids' negative behaviors are running the show.
So that's one thing that will feed a control battle.
Um and related to that is the whole notion of temperament.
I mean, some parents are simply more reactive than others, more sensitive than others.
Uh, some parents are more even
even tempered and some parents are pretty intense themselves.
So
You know, temperament can lead a parent to be reactive and that's something they wanna pay attention to 'cause it will feed the beast.
Another very critical one is a negative tone.
Um and I think probably many of your listeners are on to that, that when you're using a negative tone, it can really be interpreted by a kid as you're against me.
And once a kid starts to interpret what a parent's doing and saying as you're against me, then they're gonna become defensive and resistant.
And I think the other thing that's very important and a little more complex is this business of being other person-oriented.
In other words, when a parent is parenting, are they parenting to change their kid's behavior?
