He mentally fought back as best as he could, engaged it, felt in some sort of psychic battle with the omnipresent enemy whose very presence felt like the definition of alien malevolence.
Whatever it was, he could tell was not of this world.
Yet for some strange reason, despite the fear and antipathy he felt towards it, it at the same time felt oddly familiar, as though he'd known it for some time before this nightmare befell him.
He'd long now for an ordinary dream, or even just the empty nothing of his dreamless sleep.
Anything to escape the increasing feeling of being undone.
With what little focus he could retain, he struggled simply to think of the words, What are you?
But just as he did, the notion of that sharp and all-consuming grin manifested in what remained of his mind's eye.
its sharp, toothy, psychic impression of broadening as though growing in size and intensity.
As it reached what it felt like critical mass, with the last of Tim's sense of self or basic existence clinging desperately to whatever reality it swam within, it implied a single, unspoken sentiment.
The word or sentiment rang out like a church bell in Tim's mind.
It felt almost to be followed by a deep and hollow laughter, akin to a cackle, though not quite as shrill.
It shook him to the core of what remained, and in a single last desperate attempt to save himself, Tim imagined closing his eyes, simply wishing for nothing more than to wake up from this terrifying nightmare.
And so he did.
Sitting up in bed, Tim felt beads of cold sweat trickle down his face and neck.
He sat up, pulling in a sharp and deep breath, desperate for air as though he'd been suffocating.
Clinging tendrils of the specifics of his nightmare unwound and disappeared as he tried to think of them, each terrifying moment in memory being wiped away by the waking world with only the terror and general sentiment lingering uncomfortably in his mind.
He shook his head and with the white t-shirt he still wore wiped his brow and neck.
Slowly, his heart rate decreased until it reached a comfortable norm, and rising from his bed, he looked about his room.
Typically, he would leave his phone on the nightstand, but looking to its normal spot, found not only had he failed to place his phone down before bed, but had failed to set its charging cable up as well.
Groaning slightly, he began pouring through his still-unpacked luggage, as well as the pockets to his jacket, hoping above all else that he hadn't either left it on the plane or in the Uber he'd left the airport from.
