It means lots of things.
It means what you're feeling in your body.
It means stressful events which are happening.
It means what you're doing in your mind.
And so it becomes sort of almost impossible to solve.
It's too many things.
so one of the key distinctions they made is there's a difference between pressure on one hand and stress on the other so pressure is defined as external demand in your environment so it's the deadlines it's the customers it's the kids it's the aging parents it's the finances and everyone has pressure on them and so you can't really get rid of most of the pressures of life however interestingly not everyone's stressed
And I see this a lot when I go into workplaces.
You'll see it in your own workplace.
Some people have really high levels of pressure and really low levels of stress.
And other people in their lives have very low levels of pressure and yet they're really, really stressed.

So what they saw was that to convert the pressure into stress, what you need to do is ruminate about events.
So rumination comes from ruminants who are cows who chew their cud over and over and over again.
When we ruminate, we think about events from the past or future and we
Attach negative emotion and churn over and over and over.
So you might wake up at 3 a.m.
last night and you start ruminating about events or you do it on your commute.
And most of us just think, well, that's thinking.
But once you actually learn about this, you realize once you add the negative emotion, that's the rumination part.
