But even in my community, a lot of families...
Like I didn't really have, there weren't many examples of violent free homes in the community that I grew up in.
Very normalised.
And I remember even thinking like domestic violence isn't,
this because the women I knew in my community that I grew up in fought back you know they'd throw things or they'd resist or they'd yell and scream and I had this kind of as a child image of a domestic violence victim kind of innocently cowering in a corner never saying anything back just being really scared does your mum ever fight back
Yeah, she did at different times.
Yeah.
So, I mean, this is part of why I really kind of encourage us to talk about the complexity of these experiences and not simply present it as kind of angels and devils because...
That doesn't always reflect the reality that people are experiencing.
Of course, we never want to blame victims for what they're experiencing.
But, you know, people even who are experiencing the worst violence...
do um resist in different ways and sometimes that might be yelling or screaming or sometimes that is throwing something or just trying to survive and navigate these experiences but and show strength i mean strength
power is being shown to them in such a physical way and not always a physical way sometimes it's through coercive control yes so of course a victim wants to try and fight and match that power yeah i mean i think just trauma response when you're feeling under attack you know there's all different ways that you're trying to resist and navigate those experiences and in our work at wagex sometimes we see the misidentification of victims as perpetrators
because, you know, police walk in and the women are resisting.
But we've got to look at that full story and the broader context around those individual experiences to really understand the full complexity of the stories.
For me, in that relationship, the violence really started when I got pregnant, which again is really common, unfortunately.
And women are so vulnerable when they're carrying a baby.
Absolutely.
And it was terrifying because I thought...
Oh my God, I'm pregnant.
