I felt like Delaware had not passed the kind of gun safety measures that a democratic trifecta state should.
And so I ran for the state Senate and joined with a number of young people who got elected in that
2020 election, we were able to pass an assault weapons ban, a permit to purchase, a high capacity magazine, better background checks.
And we're already seeing violent crime go down in Delaware as a byproduct of those common sense measures.
Yeah, and that's exactly what this is.
This is an authoritarian power grab.
This is an effort to intimidate people.
And when government is seeking to intimidate its own residents,
That's not democracy.
That's authoritarianism.
Look, everyone, everyone wants to see crime go down.
And any crime is too much crime.
Any violent crime is too much crime.
What he is doing does not actually solve in the medium or long-term crime in Washington, D.C., in Los Angeles, or in Chicago or New York, if he ends up sending federal agents and National Guard troops there.
Because when you politicize law enforcement, when you politicize the National Guard by sending them out for, in many cases, what is essentially a photo op at the president's behest and an effort to intimidate political opposition, you undermine trust between the public and law enforcement, between the public and the National Guard.
You undermine trust between law enforcement, the National Guard, and political leadership.
And that has serious consequences for public safety in the long run.
And then on top of that, Wilmington, the city where I live, we were occupied by the National Guard for a year after the 1968 riots, the longest occupation of an American city since the Civil War by a military force.
The city of Wilmington is still feeling economically, from a public safety perspective,
from an equity standpoint, the ramifications of that year-long occupation back in the late 60s, we are still feeling that to this day.
