I think you have to be kind but tough.
You just don't want to be an asshole because you don't want people to not want to work with you.
You want to build bridges everywhere so that you get to decide 10 years from now, good thing I built all those bridges, which bridge do I want to go over?
If all you do is blow up bridges because of ego, then there will be no bridges and you will drown and you will die.
