I like the grind.
I like the learning.
Ultimately, what I think most people like, if you were to really deconstruct it, is a feeling that you are improving at something, that you are getting better, that you are growing.
And that growth can come in a variety of different ways.
Golf is really fun when your handicap is getting a little bit lower every year.
It's...
It wouldn't be nearly as fun if you were getting worse every single year.
I can almost promise you that.
There is something about this slow, steady progression in life.
And if you were to look at it, the scientific way to be the happiest over the course of your life is to experience slow, very steady improvements in your quality of life over a long period of time.
The worst way to be happy is to have an enormous spike and then have to come down from that.
That is why you see such high rates of depression among former professional athletes, among military, among people who win the lottery, people who have these spike financial successes, like entrepreneurial outcomes, because they no longer have a quest that makes them feel like they are getting better and that they matter and that there's significance.
Their identity is so tied up in that one thing.
And so, I just constantly think about the fact that
You are being convinced by this default mode that we've created in society that your path to the happiness that you want
is go get a four-year degree, go get some desk job, sit at a desk from nine to five for the next 40 years, get a gold watch, and then retire.
That model is going to be obliterated in the next 10 years.
I personally think that the entire higher education model is going to get destroyed.
$10 million.
I think I would take the vast majority of that and just bet on myself to go and build something.
