The idea is that a tennis wall always returns the ball, but just with a little bit less energy.

Okay, so you're like responding to him with the same energy he's bringing to the relationship, basically.

So you're focusing your main attention elsewhere on the people who are reliable, predictable around.

But with him, you're still responding with kindness, but at the same level that he's coming to you at.

Yeah, I really loved reading this part because it felt like I was speaking exactly about a relationship in my life, a friendship in my life where...

Basically, I feel like I was more into them than they were into me is what was going on.
