Are we going to be a weak European welfare state or are we going to be more like an American pro-enterprise economy with a strong safety net?

Now, I want the latter.

At the moment, their trajectory is, with the debt levels and the lack of quality of the debate, we're looking more like a busted-ass European welfare state.

That really worries me, where small business is shrinking, where the public sector grows, and we have this anemic growth, and we have this ridiculous system of low productivity, high interest rates, high inflation.

So the way out of that, and the great thing about Australian history is we've been here before, right?

Yeah, yeah.

We've been here before, and Hawke and Keating fixed it with bipartisan support for many things, and then Howard and Costello made more of the gains by putting in place the consumption tax.

I mean, who would believe that someone would go to an election saying, I'm going to put a new tax on everything because I think it's really important?

And if you go back and you look at the videos of...

of Howard and Costello arguing they'd put the GST on.

In the face of a huge scare campaign from Labor, they were arguing with conviction that this new tax system was going to fix the country, was going to help the country.

And I believe, I have to believe, that Australians will vote for something that is good for the country.

Yeah.

But what we haven't done...

He's actually developed that body of work.

Correct.

And how can it be fair on future generations to have permanent never-ending budget deficits?

I just think it's unfair.

And I think that people understand now that

that there is a connection between high debt levels and deficits and their taxes.
