So the low productivity means that we get fewer investment opportunities and we're becoming a nation where people just don't want to do business in.

And as you know from your own dealings, I mean,

We don't have a monopoly on good ideas or on capital or on great labour.

I mean, people will go where they can make the best return in the best environment, and this is now going to have a real impact on our capacity to maintain our living standards going forward.

So the productivity thing, very boring, but if we don't fix it, then we're in the soup.

Yeah, indeed.

Is it something that we can reverse though?

Look, politicians talking about red tape is very irritating, I'm sure.

But at the end of the day, there is a way to eat red tape in a mechanical way, which is like stopping new laws.

getting rid of old ones, and you know what, this crazy idea that maybe the laws on the books at the moment should just be enforced rather than just add to it.

What has happened is we've had a disease in Canberra where politicians say, well, we just need to have more laws, that will fix it.

No one ever looks at the law enforcement.

I mean, I'd say like in terms of ASIC, which I would say has been a very bad, very poor regulator when it comes to law enforcement,

we just keep on giving ASIC more and more responsibilities.

Maybe we should just look at the law enforcement.

So ultimately there's not a great level of sophistication in the debate in Canberra.

I think one of the reasons is because we haven't had –

Effectively, the media landscape has changed a lot.

If you go back 10 or 20 years, you had journalists who'd been in the press gallery for a very long time covering specialist areas like financial services or business or property, and that's all gone now.

You have to repeal legislation.
