It's a huge amount of pressure.
As Maria was saying, the pressure comes from those judgments, both explicit and implicit, that you are in some way
deficient, that you are lacking something really important, that you don't have those, as Remy said, those dumb celebrity crushes that you somehow don't connect to everybody else.
And particularly in teenagehood, but beyond that, if you're not part of that group norm, it can feel really isolating.
I guess two things come to mind.
One is to explore this in terms of getting more information about it and in finding that information, if it's good quality information, it will release some of that tension and that need to somehow get with this program.
So having the label can be really useful.
You can Google it.
demisexuality, find out some really good stuff about it and go, okay.
Going back to what you were saying before, Maria, about normal.
The real problem with normal is that it sort of invites abnormal as its opposite.
And if I'm not normal, therefore I'm abnormal.
And that's the sort of stuff that Remy and people in Remy's position could really do without.
And the second thing I guess is, this is probably a bit harder, is to become a little more self-reliant and self-reflective and say, well, that's the truth for me.
I can't fake this.
I could, but it wouldn't work anyway.
So can I find a way to be at peace with however I am sexually?
Well, that's a big question.
I would say three things.
I would say the patriarchy has played a big part in setting that up, that this is very much the idea that men want sex all the time, women want love.
