the Strait of Hormuz would be closed, it is almost beyond imagining how intelligence has value and our system can work if the person at the top of it who has the most power feels the least responsibility.
I think it is in all our institutions and intelligence is no different.
We've lost so much talent.

But to your question, Nicole, it does matter whether intelligence is able to remember that its only job is to see what is rather than what is preferred and to be willing to be massively inconvenient in the retelling of that.
And if that doesn't happen, then I would say intelligence has lost its value because that's its role.
I've walked into rooms with leaders whose shoulders slump when I walk in the room because they know I'm about to steal their decision space.
With the truth.
Because that's what we do.
Because policy doesn't require the decision maker to decide in our favor or not.
But our system works because you have to know the whole picture and we bring an important part of the picture.
