Uh they're expected to remain low at two hundred and twenty three thousand, uh broadly close to last week's two hundred and seventeen thousand.
So that um low firing equilibrium, which is um quite prevalent, looks like it's continuing and interestingly that is quite prevalent in Australia as well, just given where the retrenchment rate is at the moment.
Good morning, Phil.
Yes, not a great degree of data or new news in the overnight session.
But those earnings reports do provide some interesting snippets.
And General Motors for me was probably the most interesting.
Just looking at my screen, I think General Motors is down by about 8%.
So obviously a negative reaction in terms of General Motors share price to the news that came out.
And the key bit was that
was that new tariffs on imported cars and auto parts took a $1.1 billion bite out of its bottom line.
And so we have been asking, well, who does pay the tariff in the US?
Is it the importer?
Is it the consumer?
Or is it the foreign country?
And at least here, it seems like General Motors itself is eating some of the tariff costs there.
And it's just worth noting General Motors imports roughly half the vehicles it sells in the US, including Chevrolets and Buicks that are manufactured in South Korea.
So they noted in their earnings report that they were just waiting for greater clarity to emerge in terms of the trading landscape, especially regards to deals with Singapore before they make bigger moves.
And they're expecting a bigger tariff hit there.
So from an earnings perspective, it looks like tariffs are starting to impact the earnings outlook, at least for the industrial side of the economy.
And then Coca-Cola, although it was an okay earnings report, when you broke it down in terms of what was driving it, you did see a sales gain of 5% in the second quarter, but that was primarily driven by price increases rather than volumes.
