Museums specialize in dead people, so that's kind of their thing. Some comments, how wouldn't they notice that they didn't get it back after passing it around? Others are also correct that there are some things, like ancient pottery, are so plentiful that some can be sacrificed to public education without taking away from our collective historical knowledge. If it were me, I'd send it back. Depending on the museum's size, they probably don't have the resources to do a lot of police work and would probably be more relieved than anything.
