The goal isn't to stop the emotional wave, but to give yourself enough space to experience it without being completely carried away by it.

And if you enjoy meditating with other people,

You might experiment with a simple shared emotional check-in at the beginning of the session.

Each person can take a few moments to share how they're arriving that day, without needing to explain the whole story behind it.

This can create more emotional awareness within the group and make it easier to recognize that everyone is entering the meditation with their own emotional state, rather than unconsciously assuming that the atmosphere belongs.

Now, if you have an undefined or open solar plexus, you may want to experiment with practices that give you more space to reconnect with your own baseline.

One simple option is solo grounding meditation.

Especially when you've already spent a lot of time around other people.

You could do a slow body scan, notice the sensation of your feet against the floor, follow your breathing, or simply bring your attention to the physical sensations in your body.

Doing this alone, in a quiet environment, can give you an opportunity to notice what you're experiencing without adding another layer of external stimulation.

Another practice I really like for this is what I call the

Whose is this?

Pause.

Before or after meditation, when you notice a strong emotion, take a moment to observe it without immediately identifying with it.

You can write down something as simple as, I'm feeling anxious right now.

Is this connected to something that actually happened to me?

Or could I be responding to the emotional atmosphere around me?

You don't need to come up with a definite answer.
