For example, when I was in manufacturing, one of the manufacturing company was actually a gaming provider.
So we were manufacturing the lottery ticket machines that people would see at the grocery stores or whenever they went to the gas station and wanted to play.
One of the big economic factor is whenever there is a recession, people play more the lottery.
So when things are going well, you do not have as many people playing the lottery as when things are going well.
So that was a leading indicator into, okay, when our sales are going up, we're rejoicing.
We also were like, ooh, we're about to get in trouble.
So it was one of those industries.
So till this day, I go and I kind of look of like how things are going.
And when I see the lottery tickets, I'm like, oh, we're about to hit a recession.
But I wouldn't have seen it necessarily if I hadn't been working in that industry, understanding the events.
Because to really understand the numbers that you see on the paper, and it's a profit and loss statement, you have to understand how they came to be, how the business made money, what expenses you had to incur to make money, how we have to go after the customer, your marketing, like all those things.
But you have to be able to see the bigger picture, right?
Not just what happened, which is like traditional accounting, but
Today in finance, you have to be able to say, okay, this happened, great.
What does it mean for us for tomorrow, for the plans we have for tomorrow?
What are the signs?
What should I be preparing for that I may not be necessarily seeing on paper today?
Like that's really what the CFO role is.
And I think having those experiences really helped me better understand how that looks like on the outside.
