Well, I'm super pumped for this one. And of course, you know, I always ensure to give people their flowers while they are still alive. So please sit back while I read out a carefully crafted introduction that I made for you. So, ladies and gentlemen, today's guest represents everything we believe modern leadership should look like. She has built an extraordinary career across global organizations, rising through accounting, FP&A, and executive finance, before becoming chief financial officer of one of America's leading community development financial institutions. She was named the 2025 CFO of the Year by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, is a two-time CPA practice advisor, 40 under 40 honoree, teaches finance professionals through the Wharton Online FP&A Certificate Program, and has been featured in publications including the Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Accounting Today, and Strategic Finance Magazine.
Beyond the boardroom, she is helping redefine what a modern CFO looks like through thought leadership, education, and her podcast, The Diary of a CFO. Today, we explore leadership, finance, AI, governance, resilience, disability, personal branding, and what it really takes to become a trusted executive in today's rapidly changing business world. Wow. Yeah, I know a little bit of Spanish. You know, Comestas, all that stuff. Amigos. Wow. I think before we hit the record button, I was talking about, you know, like we have something in common. You are the host of The Diary of a CFO. And, you know, I came out of nowhere and started Diary of a CFO.
And, you know, a lot of these podcasting agencies reach out to me by email and say, hi, Waseer. And when I'm having a bad day, I'm always just frowning like, I am not Waseer. I am not. So sorry, but not sorry. Yeah. There was a day I was having a bad day and then I just tapped to the guy. I'm like, you did not do your homework right. I am not. Whoa. But it's great to finally meet the woman, the myth and the legend. Right.
And, you know, in terms of your journey, you're welcome. In terms of your journey, a lot of people see the CFO today. They see the awards. They see the titles. But very few actually see the journey. Of course, I always say there, there is no game without pain. There's no glory without a story. So can you please take us back to the beginning and tell us the story behind your career?
Gosh, so true. There's so much behind, you know, the nice resume, the nice LinkedIn page. So I'm originally from Africa, West Africa. And I came here when I was 17 years old. And I initially wanted to do actuarial science. So coming from Maverick Coast first, English was my second language, which means I did my whole schooling, everything until age 17. And then came here. So I had to adjust to the language. I had to learn like the people, how things were, because it's completely different from where I was from.
