What is the overall goal of using AI for early sepsis detection?

Unknown 0:01
Welcome to another session of the Fifth World Sepsis Congress. And yes, today we are taking a closer look at AI, a term you are, no doubt, hearing everywhere right now. But AI and sepsis is more than just a buzzword. It can help diagnose sepsis much earlier, thus saving lives. In this session, we'll discover how artificial intelligence is transforming the way we detect, treat, and manage sepsis. Yeah. Our moderator for today is Catherine Oweis, joined by three clinicians and researchers that have actually implemented AI in their different regions and settings. Without further ado, over to Catherine to get us started.

Welcome everybody to the session number ten of AI solution for SEPSID at the Fifth World SEPSID Congress. Good morning, good afternoon. I'm Catherine Weiss. I'm the executive director of the Health Diplomacy Alliance, and we are thrilled to have you here for what is gonna be a promising and dynamic and forward looking discussion on this session. As you know, sepsis is a global health crisis claiming millions of lives if years. Those numbers not only underscore the urgency but the early need for early detention and timely intervention, where AI plays a pivotal role in the first time. In Transforming septic care. For this discussion, we encourage you to use the chat and actively participate in the discussions.
Katherine Urbáez 1:27
For any question, please submit your questions in the chat using the prefix Q, and we will integrate these questions into our discussions with the speakers as as we move forward with them. Today we will we will explore several different aspects on how artificial intelligence is transforming septic. Yeah. from predictive algorithms in emergency departments to AI assisted diagnostic in intensive care units. Our speakers will showcase real world application. the challenges in implementation and the potential of AI to reduce mortality and to improve clinical outcomes. And for that, I wanna open the floor and the discussion with Dr. Nathan Safiro, who is Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an attending physician at Beth Israel Declines Medical Center.
Katherine Urbáez 2:17
His research interest is mostly focused on diagnostic and treatment of early sepsis and resuscitations in critical illness. And he's gonna be covering today. about the sepsy hymnoscore, the first FDA approved AI tool for sepsis prediction. Doctor Safiro, you have the floor.
Nathan Shapiro 2:37
Thank you very much. As mentioned, I'll be talking about um the first FDA approved AI-based score, just in the way of disclosures. Um, prenosis is that the company created the score and I am a consultant for them, just for full transparency. So let's just think about big picture in general. As a clinician, when we go and see a patient, we're going to then integrate what's going on with the patient. We're going to think about the demographics. Perhaps we're going to get some biomarker measurements, standard lab testing, vital signs, comorbidities, and I'm going to add not pictured here physical exam. So these things combine to help us assess the patient. And I think we're asking, in some ways, uh, I like to break it down to two.
Nathan Shapiro 3:21
Two basic questions. Number one is diagnosis. Is it an infection that's make or sepsis that's making the patient in front of me sick? And number two is prognosis. Okay, I've decided that they have an infection maybe. Are they high severity or low severity? And what kind of care do they need beyond anti-uminfectives in order to support them? Is it care that they can just go home and stay well hydrated, or do they need to come in for intravenous fluids, perhaps respiratory care, et cetera? So the sepsis immunoscore, which is going to be the topic of the conversation, is an AI tool. And what this AI tool does Is it taps into the A into the EMR, electronic medical record, it pulls comorbidities, standard lab testing, vital sign demographics, and comorbidity results.
Nathan Shapiro 4:11
It pulls them in and then we add in a few extra protein biomarkers. And the immunoscore is an AI tool that integrates all of these things in order to predict whether a patient has sepsis and then if they
