All right, let's get specific because Carlton supporters and Port Adelaide supporters have reason to be really happy about what lies ahead with regards to the acquisition via the draft of Cody Walker. and Dougie Cochran. But there are caveats attached to the access of those two clubs to those two players this year, which is vastly different and far more costly than has been historically the case with clubs getting access to father, son or academy players. So it's going to impact these two clubs in a way that no one else has been subjected to before, Marty. And you're about to tell us how and why.

Absolutely, Damien. No, thank you for that. So what I wanted to do first is just to give you a little bit of a snapshot of what happened last year. So this is the last time that obviously the previous rules were in place. So we go back 12 months ago to last year's player movement period, and we use the Gold Coast Suns as an example. They traded pick seven and eight as part of its player movement dealings to get Christian Petrarca in the door. Yet they still could secure four Academy prospects in the first 18 selections of the 2025 National Draft, being Zeke Ulan pick two, Dylan Patterson pick five, Jai Murray at pick 17, and Bo Adelsall with pick 18. And they did this using around 13 picks and different machinations to get in and out of the draft.
So that was the way it was. Enter February 2026, we've got the new rules. So the 2026 rule changes what a club now has to pay to match a father-son, Northern Academy or Next Generation Academy bid. For bids in the first two rounds, the club has a maximum of two current draft picks. The price then depends on where it finished that season. So to give you a quick snapshot, a bid comes in at picks one to 18 for a particular club. The 2026 rule now is they can use a maximum of two picks to match it and the ladder-based loading or discount may apply.
What changed in the 2026 AFL father-son and academy draft rules?
So with that's really important. So to give you a quick snapshot on that, first to second, you get a 20% loading. Third to fourth, you get a 10% loading. Fifth to 10th, you get no adjustment. And 11th to 18th, you'll get a 10% discount on obviously the points index attributed to that pick. All I'm
hearing here is just one rule covering up another rule, covering up another rule, covering up another rule.
It's a
big shift though, isn't it? It's a massive shift.
